Volvo’s jacked-up V40 Cross Country hatch (above) will soon have a ‘proper’ SUV companion, or even an all-out replacement.

According to Autocar magazine in the UK, Volvo chairman Hakan Samuelsson has confirmed plans for a new compact SUV that will likely debut as the long-rumoured XC40.

Speaking with the magazine, Samuelsson said that a small SUV is ranked “very high” in the company’s priorities.

“There is a clear trend towards downsizing and we will provide customers with an SUV that is small in stature but remains premium in nature,” he told Autocar.

Samuelsson did not offer any word on timing for the new model, although he did provide one key clue: “In four years’ time, the new XC90 will be the oldest car we make”.

That means that, along with the so-called XC40, we can expect replacements for the midsized XC60, along with the S60/V60 twins and the V40 hatch in that time.

That’s to be expected, of course, with the V40 entering its third year in 2015 and the S60/V60 models nearing their fifth birthday.
