Volvo's new V40 Cross Country crossover is now on sale in Australia, launching with one trim specification, two engine options and one automatic transmission.

Arriving as a jacked-up and ruggedised version of Volvo's popular new V40 hatch, the Cross Country is priced from $47,990 plus on-roads.

“Volvo is undergoing a rapid change in its model line-up and the V40 Cross Country is the latest addition,” Volvo Australia boss Matt Braid said today.

“Where the Volvo XC models happily flex their muscles, the V40 Cross Country boasts a sleek ruggedness with unique features integrated into the stylish Scandinavian design."

Mechanical Package

Two familiar engines are offered with the V40 CC: the top-shelf 187kW/360Nm 2.5 litre turbo petrol T5 engine, and the 130kW/400Nm five-cylinder 2.0 litre D4.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed Adaptive Geartronic automatic transmission. The T5 is offered with all-wheel-drive as standard, while the D4 is a front-wheel-drive package only.

Fuel consumption with the petrol model is rated at 8.4 l/100km, and the 0-100km/h sprint is complete in a sharp 6.4 seconds.

The diesel lists fuel use at 5.3 l/100km, and a 0-100km/h time of 8.3 seconds is promised.

The V40 CC is suspended by a MacPherson setup at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, and in crossover form, the CC has been raised 40mm higher than the regular V40 hatch.

Towing capacity is rated at 1500kg braked for both models. Hill Descent Control is also featured.

Standard features for the V40 Cross Country include durable black add-ons, 18-inch matte black alloy wheels, a honeycomb mesh grille and daytime running lights in the front bumper.

Exterior features also include anodised black window frame and mirror caps, along with integrated roof rails.

Rear storage capacity is listed at 324 litres with the rear seats up, 600 litres when folded down.

Depending on model and options, safety equipment includes a pedestrian airbag system and pedestrian/cyclist detection, City Safety and Cross Traffic Alert, Road Sign Information reader, Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert, Park Assist Pilot, Active High Beam and Driver Alert System.

The driver’s side is also fitted with a knee airbag, deployed together with the other airbags in the event of a frontal collision.
