Volvo’s new V40 small car has earned a five-star safety rating and a record overall score in the latest round of Euro NCAP collision testing.

Like the local ANCAP system, Euro NCAP testing is comprised of categories for adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

The V40's top score was awarded in the safety assist category, thanks to active safety systems such as pedestrian detection and autobrake, lane departure assistance, and blind spot detection.

The V40 also earned record ratings for adult occupant protection and pedestrian protection - the latter largely due to the new model’s innovative pedestrian airbag system.

“We are very proud to have one of the world's safest cars and we're taking yet another important step toward our 2020 target that nobody should die or be seriously injured in a Volvo", Volvo safety boss Thomas Broberg said.

Other Australia-bound models to receive five stars were Audi’s new A3 and the new Clio light car.

The A3 was rated at 95 percent for adult occupant protection, an also scored 87 percent for child occupant protection.

A lack of standard speed limiter reduced the Audi’s safety assist score to 86 percent, while a 74 percent pedestrian protection score was impressive despite lacking the Volvo’s airbag system.

The previous generation Renault Clio was the first to achieve a five star rating in 2005, and the new model built on this record with a 99 percent safety assist rating.

Also impressive for Clio were 88 percent adult, and 89 percent child occupant ratings, along with a segment-leading 66 percent pedestrian protection score.

The A3 is expected for local launch early next year, with the Clio likely to follow later in the year.
