"The vanilla days are over", promises Volvo's vice president of design, Thomas Ingenlath, in a short new teaser video released today.
Poached from Volkswagen in 2012, Ingenlath was responsible for the popular Bluesport concept, along with the quirky futuristic Nils... and the first-generation Skoda Superb. So, he's been around the styling block.
What can we expect Ingenlath to bring to Volvo? If today's teaser - and the earlier anonymised rendering shown below - is anything to go by, sharpened coupe-like styling is on the cards for the Swedish carmaker.
Glimpsed in tightly cropped images in the new video, we see that the coming concept is likely a two-door model, inspired in some part by the iconic P1800 of the 1960s.
And while forward-thinking, the concept's lines are distinctly Volvo, with wrapped tail-lights, familiar winglets at the front end and that 'very Volvo' grille design.
We won't need to wait long to see the new concept in full, with a Frankfurt Motor Show debut confirmed for next month.
Volvo recently revealed details of a new engine range that will appear in the brand's existing range next year, and the carmaker has also confirmed it will soon begin production in China under the auspices of new owner Geely.
