January’s Detroit Auto Show will be the venue for the official unveiling of Volvo’s large S90 sedan.

To tide you over until then, Volvo has offered a pair of dark and moody teaser shots, highlighting the new sedan’s Scandinavian-inspired design.

Like the XC90 SUV, with which the S90 shares its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, the new sedan will offer simpler forms featuring more taut body-side surfacing and square-set head and tail lights.

Compared to the S80 it replaces, the new vehicle features a more gently tapered roofline, and a ‘six-window’ glasshouse, pulling the proportions rearward.

The blurred rear shot shows the two-tier LED tail lights that extend into the bootlid, adding to the impression of width.
