Drivers, cycling isn't going to go away. We've seen overflowing bike racks at carmaker headquarters', we've had invitations to ride with company bosses, and more than a few motoring journos are mad for it (TMR's Mike Stevens included).

Volvo's on top of it however, revealing a new cyclist detection system this week designed to spot pedal-powered two-wheel commuters on the road.

Arriving as an evolution of its existing Pedestrian Detection system, launched in 2010, the new package includes the usual suite of automatic braking capabilities while adding some new tricks.

For new models equipped with the system, a new and faster vision processing technology is featured, allowing the vehicle to detect "certain" cyclist situations.

The system allows for the detection of cyclists in front of the vehicle, moving in the same direction, alerting the driver and applying brakes if necessary.

As with the Pedestrian Detection system, radar and camera data is used to detect and interpret objects on the road.

The system is expected to roll out with new and updated models over the coming year, including the V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80
