Reports of a production debut for Volkswagen’s already wild Golf R 400 concept are one thing, but suggestions that it could produce even more power in production form are another matter all together.

Revealed early last month, the R 400 concept is believed to be a preview of a hot new flagship hatch in the growing Golf range.

And a flagship it would be: while the regular Golf R offers 221kW in Europe, the R 400 sees the 2.0 litre turbo engine’s output boosted to 295kW.

Now, according to US magazine Car & Driver, VW development boss Heinz-Jakob Neusser has hinted at figures above 300kW - easily eclipsing the 265kW out of Mercedes AMG’s already mean A 45 hatch.
