Volkswagen has confirmed that a five-door verison of its upcoming Up! will debut in 2012. The news follows the five-door's unveiling in Cross Up! form at last month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Moving away from the sporting profile of the current three-door variant, the five-door Up! will feature a more horizontal belt line. Volkswagen describes the subtle design difference as giving the Up! "a more upright appearance."

While a production version of the jacked-up Cross Up! concept has not been confirmed, Volkswagen has not ruled out a debut for the high-riding variant.

Power for the five-door will likely be provided by the same engines driving the three-door, including a turbocharged and direct-injected 44kW 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine. A 60kW version of the same engine will be offered in up-spec models.
