Volkswagen has taken the powertrain from its XL1 plug-in hybrid and fitted it to the Up! as a concept for the Tokyo Motor Show.
Called the Twin Up, the concept boasts the XL1’s plug-in diesel-hybrid set-up. That gives it a two-cylinder 0.8 litre diesel engine and electric motor producing 35kW each, and matched to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.
VW says the Twin Up concept can lay claim to being Europe’s most fuel-efficient four-seater car with a combined figure of just 1.1 l/100km or an incredible 257 MPG in the ‘old’ language.
