Volkswagen is recalling its 2016 Touareg SUV this week, due to a potential problem with the side airbags.

The carmaker has identified a weakness in the airbag fabric, which may be able to tear when the airbag is deployed.

Should the airbag tear upon deployment when needed during a collision, its effectiveness may be reduced which could increase the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.

A specific range of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are included in the recall, with a total of 59 Touaregs on the list.

Volkswagen says the majority of affected vehicles are yet to be delivered to customers or even dealers, meaning the required work will be carried out before the vehicles are released onto the market.

The carmaker’s smaller SUV, the Tiguan, was recalled last month along with the Skoda Yeti.

Each was recalled for matters also related to side curtain airbags, although these problems are unrelated to the Touareg recall.

Volkswagen will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone Volkswagen Customer Care on 1800 504 076.
