Volkswagen To Launch Particulate Filters For Petrol Engines

The Volkswagen Group is following the lead of its German rival Mercedes-Benz in introducing particulate filters for petrol engines.

Claimed to reduce the emission of fine soot particles from the exhaust pipe by as much as 90 per-cent, Volkswagen Group’s petrol engine particulate filters will be fitted to all direct injection TSI and TFSI engines from next year and the German giant says by 2022 up to 7.0-million of its vehicles will be equipped with particulate filters.

Opening the batting will be the 1.4-litre TSI engine in the new Volkswagen Tiguan and the 2.0-litre TFSI engine in the Audi A5 - both launching in June next year.

“Following increases in efficiency and lower CO2 output, we are now bringing about a sustained reduction in the emission levels of our modern petrol engines by fitting particulate filters as standard,” explained Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, head of Volkswagen Group R&D.

Mercedes-Benz announced a few months back that petrol engines in the in the facelifted S-Class model will come fitted with particulate filters.
