Perhaps envious of BMW's success with its MINI sub-brand, Volkswagen is reportedly making plans to launch a retro offshoot of its own based on the Beetle.

According to German mag Autobild, the Beetle family's first new member will be a high-riding four-door SUV, similar in size to MINI's own Countryman and sporting a similar style to the Beetle Dune Concept shown at this year's Detroit show.

Other models reportedly in the pipeline include a small people mover based on the Bulli concept (which channelled the classic VW Kombi) and a low-slung coupe styled after the Karmann Ghia.

However, all of these models won't become reality until the next generation VW Beetle arrives.

With the current Beetle still a relatively fresh arrival, that means we likely won't see any of the above Beetle sub-models until 2019 at the earliest.

Why? According to Autobild, Volkswagen wants to keep cost low by building all of the Beetle spinoffs on its new MQB platform. This platform will become the basis for all transverse-engined small and medium cars in the Volkswagen Group.
