What you're looking at isn't a somewhat shabby Tiguan - it's a test mule for the production version of Volkswagen's T-Roc compact SUV.

The T-Roc made its debut earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, previewing a future Juke-sized crossover that would complement the Tiguan, Touareg and the upcoming Crossblue in VW's SUV stable.

However, the T-Roc concept's three-door configuration and removable targa roof (anyone remember the Suzuki X-90?) may get nixed in the transition from show car to road car, with the T-Roc's eventual production version expected to be a more conventional five-door SUV.

The markedly narrower track width of this prototype is the key giveaway that this is a T-Roc development mule, but otherwise there are few clues about mechanical package, the provision of AWD and, of course, styling.

Expect to see more of the T-Roc's production version as the expected launch in 2016 draws closer.
