Volkswagen has today confirmed Australian specifications and pricing for the delicious Scirocco R hot hatch, ahead of its local debut in February next year.

Slotting in between the Golf GTI and Golf R in VW's performance line-up, the Scirocco R will retail for $47,490 in manual form, with the optional DSG twin-clutch automatic adding $2500 to the price tag.

Not only does its price straddle the divide between the top-shelf five-doors - so does the Scirocco's mechanical package.

Although it's equipped with the same 188kW/330Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as the Golf R, the Scirocco ditches the flagship Golf's all-wheel-drive drivetrain in favour of front-wheel-drive underpinnings.

Volkswagen claims the Scirocco R can sprint from rest to 100km/h in just 6.0 seconds when equipped with the DSG, and 6.2 seconds with the manual.

Volkswagen also claims an average fuel economy figure of 8.1 l/100km (8.2 l/100km with the DSG automatic).

An electronic brake-based pseudo-LSD keeps wheelspin in check and helps reduce understeer, while the Scirocco R's MacPherson struts and multi-link rear suspension is augmented by the Adaptive Chassis Control multi-mode damper system - standard on Australian-spec Scirocco Rs.

Braking hardware consists of 345mm front rotors and 310mm rear rotors, and the electro-mechanical power steering system has been tuned for a sportier feel.

A set of 19-inch alloys are standard, shod with 235/35R19  tyres.

Standard equipment includes LED daytime running lamps, bi-xenon headlamps, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker sound system with six-CD stacker.

Options consist of a Dynaudio premium sound system ($2500), satellite navigation ($1100) and a panoramic sunroof ($1800).

The Scirocco R features a comprehensive list of safety equipment, including stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, six airbags (front, front side and curtain), anti-whiplash front headrests and pretensioning front seatbelts.
