Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released the first round of teaser images for its 2017 Crafter Van range, ahead of the commercial vehicle’s debut at the IAA Commercial Vehicle expo in Hannover, Germany.

Unlike its predecessor, which shares its bodywork and platform with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter range, this new Crafter will be designed and built in-house by Volkswagen, with production to take make at a new facility in Poland.

Although most details of the new Crafter are still unknown it’s expected that the 3.0 litre diesel V6 as seen in the updated Amarok will make its way into some variants of the new van, alongside the 2.0 four-cylinder engines from the Transporter.

Volkswagen has also divulged that the Crafter will offer a class-leading 0.33Cd drag coefficient, ensuring better fuel economy.

These early renderings only depict a fully enclosed van which will once again be offered with a range of different lengths and roof heights, single and double cab chassis variants will also be added to the range.

Also, expect the rather glamorous looking oversized alloy wheels in the sketches to make way for something smaller and more practical as the Crafter makes its move to a production reality.

While Volkswagen is most excited by how the chiselled new van looks, tradespeople and fleet companies around the globe will have a keen eye on price, and specifications, to see if Volkswagens solo effort warrants adding to their workforce.
