As the Woerthersee Treffen got underway for 2015, it appeared the Volkswagen Group had found time to squeeze the unveiling of one more concept into proceedings.

Except that this concept is the work of Swiss coachbuilder Fred Bernhard, who has finally pulled the covers from his ‘T1 Racing Taxi’ creation after six years of toil.

The Volkswagen Kombi has long been a favourite among enthusiasts in the modified car scene as a number of high-performance engines fit somewhat neatly into the van’s rear engine bay.

Subaru’s horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine is one such example, along with many options from that other rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive German carmaker: Porsche.

Meet the T1, a 1962 Volkswagen Kombi Bulli which is now sporting a 389kW/757Nm turbocharged flat-six from a Porsche 993-generation 911 Turbo.
