As with the previous generation, the Alltrack is essentially a Passat wagon on stilts, gaining a taller ground clearance and harder-wearing exterior add-ons.
The new Passat Alltrack gets rugged flares and side sills, along with light skid plates at both ends.
There are also new wheel designs and integrated roof rails for the weekend away.
Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is standard across the range and, in Europe, power is provided by a line-up of petrol and diesel engines. Outputs range from 150kW to 240kW.
The more powerful models are also equipped with VW’s XDS+ system, which applies the brakes at the inside wheels during fast cornering for increase control.
The new Alltrack will go on sale in Europe from September, with an Australian launch likely to occur in the first half of 2016.
