Porsche's Panamera is already one of two models in the German automaker's stable to be available with a hybrid powertrain, however fresh reports say the sleek four-door may also become the company's first plug-in hybrid model.

According to US motoring outlets Automotive News and Motor Trend, Porsche will release a plug-in petrol electric model by the end of 2014.

This plug-in model will most likely be based on the existing Panamera S Hybrid and share its Audi-sourced 3.0 litre supercharged V6 engine and electric motor powertrain.

Aside from the addition of a plug receptacle allowing the car to be charged from a mains outlet, the plug-in Panamera will also feature lithium ion batteries rather than the Panamera S Hybrid's nickel-metal hydride battery packs.

Power capacity will be boosted in the process, and the electric-only driving range is expected to be close to 30km.

With emissions legislation in Europe and the USA steadily tightening, the plug-in Panamera will give Porsche a golden opportunity to drop its fleet average emissions.

Whether it will come to Australia remains to be seen, however with both the Panamera S Hybrid and Cayenne S Hybrid already being sold locally, it's likely that we'll see it here by the middle of this decade.

Volkswagen May Build New Boxster, Cayman

Should demand of its upcoming 2013 Boxster and 2013 Cayman exceed supply, Porsche may source some of its production from sister company Volkswagen.

Under the proposed arrangement, Volkswagen's Osnabrueck plant - formerly operated by Wilhelm Karmann GmbH - will be tooled up to build the new Boxster and Cayman lines alongside other models like the VW Golf Cabrio, but only if capacity is exceeded at Porsche's own Zuffenhausen facility .

In recent years total Porsche production has averaged around 100,000 units per annum.

The Osnabrueck plant is said to be capable of producing around the same number of cars, so by having Volkswagen pick up any overflow capacity Porsche should be able to easily cater for any significant spikes in demand.

Both the 2013 Porsche Boxster and 2013 Porsche Cayman are expected to make their local debuts either late this year or in early 2013.
