The Volkswagen Golf Clubsport S looks like the king that stole the crown, well the Nurburgring lap record for front wheel drive cars, at least.

Unlike the trash-talk from the Honda Civic Type R and Renault Megane RS about which car would run the ring the fastest, the Golf GTI Clubsport S has quietly snatched the title.

To do so, Volkswagen has turned the wick up on the standard Golf GTI from 162kW and 350Nm, with the 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine throwing down a more muscular 228kW and 380Nm.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S also sheds 30kg, missing out on a rear seats, sound insulation, and a rear parcel shelf, and picking up a pair of lightweight racing bucket seats in the front, as well as an aluminium subframe.

The transmission is manual-only too, another weight-saving measure.

And that all-important Nurburgring lap time? Completed in just 7:49.21, taking top FWD honours from the Honda Civic Type R’s previous 7:50.63 lap.

That time also sees the Golf GTI Clubsport S finish ahead of the likes of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (7:51.51) and the Mercedes CLK DTM AMG (7:52) - a purpose built racer from just a decade ago.

The car used to set the record wasn’t completely showroom-ready though, with Volkswagen engineers developing a specific Nurburgring setting for the dynamic chassis control system, honing the suspension and steering to suit the Ring.

A different brake pad compound and semi-slick Michelin tyres were also fitted for the record run.

The special edition Golf GTI Clubsport S makes its official debut as part of the GTI Treffen Worthersee in Austria - a gathering for the Golf, and Volkswagen Group faithful, which opens today.

As for Australia, while the regular GTI Clubsport will make its way here, wearing Golf GTI 40 Years Edition badges and offering a slightly better equipped interior, but ‘only’ 195kW, the Clubsport S, limited to just 400 units, is likely to remain a Europe-only proposition.
