Speaking to Car magazine, VW R&D boss Dr Ulrich Hackenberg reportedly confirmed that a Golf concept would appear, and addressed some comparisons to VW’s W12 GTI Golf concept from 2007.
“It won’t have as much power as the Golf GTI W12,” Mr Hackenberg said. “It will be more realistic.”
It was at the Wörthersee show in 2007 that the mad Golf GTI W12 concept first shed its covers, featuring a mid-mounted twin-turbo 6.0 litre W12 engine that produced 478Kw.
The original Golf GTI debuted in 1975 and as the 40th anniversary approaches, it is all but certain that VW will build a special edition of the hot-hatch - the car that arguably 'invented' the category - to mark the occasion.
A Golf concept in a couple of weeks from now could provide clues to a fortieth anniversary special, or perhaps just a Mark VII Edition 40 GTI to follow on from the Edition 35 in the Mk VI Golf.
The 2013 Wörthersee tuning show starts on Friday 17 May while the regular Mark VII Golf GTI is expected to hit the showrooms in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year.
