You can't see it here, but the new 'Modular Transverse Matrix' platform (or MQB; Modularer Querbaukasten) is the real star beneath Volkswagen's Cross Coupe SUV concept.

The Cross Coupe is the first vehicle to utilise the new MQB platform, and despite its Touareg-like proportions, the Cross Coupe concept is nearly 100mm shorter than the Tiguan.

Just as the Tiguan shares its platform with the likes of the small Golf and the large Skoda Superb, the new MQB platform will feature beneath a host of new Volkswagen models, including the next Golf hatch and TT coupe.

In the case of the Cross Coupe, Volkswagen describes the concept as a "hint of how a crossover between a four-door coupe and an SUV could look like" (although we can see that already in the larger BMW X6).

Volkswagen's Tokyo Motor Show star is powered by a hybrid system, pairing a 85kW/270Nm direct-injected petrol engine with two electric motors, one at each axle.

Each electric motor delivers 40kW and 180kW, with the combination of petrol and electric powertrains, and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, giving the Cross Coupe a 0-100km/h time of seven seconds and a top speed of 200km/h.

Whether the Cross Coupe will make its way to production is unclear, although we might see its styling on the next-generation Tiguan.
