Volkswagen has reportedly binned plans for a production version of its Bulli concept, focusing instead on a new offering in the popular crossover market.

Revealed at last year's Geneva Motor Show, the Bulli offered a second look at a possible new model first previewed by the 2001 Microbus concept.

Reports in the past year had suggested that a production debut was imminent, but a review of the van's sales potential in Europe and the US has reportedly seen the project scrubbed.

The carmaker will instead produce a new compact SUV that will share its platform with Audi's new Q2 crossover, entering the Volkswagen range beneath the midsized Tiguan.

The recent Cross Coupe concept could offer a hint at the new model's styling, although a smaller footprint is likely.

Volkswagen research and development boss Ulrich Hackenberg is also understood to have once again confirmed an indefinite hiatus for the popular Bluesport concept's production hopes.

Speaking at the Paris Motor Show this week, Hackenberg was quoted as describing the project as too great a risk, due to the current financial climate in Europe.
