Volkswagen Bulli Concept Moves Closer To Production: Report

The Volkswagen Kombi-inspired Bulli Concept is moving closer to a production debut, new reports out of Europe this week suggest.

According to Britain's Autocar, the Bulli, or Kombi, could soon join the new Beetle in a "heritage" range within the Volkswagen brand.

Speaking with the magazine, Volkswagen group design boss Walter de Silva said that he is convinced of the Bulli's market potential and appeal.

“We don’t have a space for another conventional MPV, but this one would be desirable on a different level, combining practicality with the heritage appeal,” he said.

The report adds that as competition from 'newer' Korean and Chinese brands continues to build, Volkswagen is eager to remind buyers of the company's long history and influence in the industry.

The Bulli's market potential is believed to be quite strong already, but according to Autocar, de Silva believes that the launch of a "heritage" range would all-but assure its production.

The Bulli concept offers seating for six, thanks to the use of a 60:40 bench arrangement up front - common with many commercial vehicles, and reminiscent of many passengers vehicles of generations long past.

For couples hitting the road, the Bulli's seats can also fold flat to provide a sleeping space for two adults.

Power is provided by an electric drivetrain borrowed from the company's upcoming E-Motion line, with a claimed driving range of up to 300km from one charge.
