Volkswagen has confirmed this week that it will launch a diesel variant of the new Beetle in the North American market.

Dubbed simply "Beetle TDI", the oil-burning 'bug is powered by VW's versatile 103kW/320Nm 2.0 litre turbodiesel inline four, and returns fuel economy figures of 8.11 l/100km in the city, and 6.03 l/100km on the highway.

Like the rest of the Beetle range, transmission choices comprise a six-speed manual, or a six-speed twin-clutch automatic, and front-wheel-drive of course.

Prices have yet to be announced for the three-model Beetle TDI range, however pricing will be announced closer to the car's North American launch date in the third quarter of this year.

Australia

The 2013 Beetle is set to arrive in Australian showrooms in late 2012, with a range of turbocharged petrol engines expected to be offered.

Local availability of a diesel Beetle has yet to be confirmed, but with Volkswagen's strong presence in the diesel passenger car market it wouldn't be surprising to see the Beetle TDI added to the German automaker's local line-up.
