Volkswagen’s new entry in the Global Rally Cross series has been uncovered, ahead of its first event in Washington DC.

Under the wing of Andretti Autosport, drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed will make the step up from the team’s current Volkswagen Polo racers, to the more purpose-built Beetle in time for Round Three.

Speed already has two victories under his belt this season, and is enthusiastic about the team’s chances with its new car.

“The Polo has already proved super-competitive, and we are really looking forward to racing a car that has been engineered specifically by Volkswagen Motorsport for GRC competition,” Speed said.

The Beetle’s ‘party-piece’ is its 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 544 horsepower (406kW), with power reaching all four wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission and multi-plate limited-slip differentials at both front and rear.

The racer uses strut-type suspension with ZF dampers giving it 228mm of travel, 350mm front and 295mm rear vented brake rotors with four-piston calipers and 17-inch wheels wearing Yokohama tyres.

Outside, the Beetle GRC features a large rear wing and bonnet and side-mounted air intakes along with a radiator from Australia’s own PWR.

All of these features combine in a package weighing just 1210kg (the regulated minimum weight for the GRC series) to give the Beetle GRC a 0-100km/h time of just 2.1 seconds.
