McLaren has handed down a special new video of its special new P1 hypercar this week, celebrating a gloriously quick lap of the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

The carmaker recently confirmed an official 0-100km/h time of just 2.8 seconds for the P1, but it had yet to offer any word on that all-important figure: a lap time for 'the green hell'.

Today isn't that day, but McLaren has at least confirmed that a time below seven minutes was achieved. Does that make it the quickest production car to run the 'ring?

Only if it beat the time set by Porsche's 918 Spyder, which recorded a wickedly fast 6:57 lap in September - and McLaren isn't saying.

Does that mean the P1's lap time landed in the tiny space between 6:57 and 7:00? Cynics might suggest that's the only reason for McLaren to keep quiet on the numbers, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Whatever the case, it's only bragging rights. Whether the P1 recorded 6:56 or 6:58, there is no denying that McLaren's latest, like the 918 Spyder, is one hell of a thing.
