The integration of Apple's iPhone-powering mobile operating system - iOS - into cars has been a slow process, to say the least.

Sure, most carmakers now offer some level of connectivity, starting with music control and, thanks to the recent launch of Apple Siri Eyes Free, new enhanced voice control features.

But that's about it. Until now, that is, because this week's Apple Worldwide Developer's Conference has seen the unveiling of a new integrated service: iOS in the Car.

The new in-car infotainment system, which is already built into the new iOS 7 update announced today, will allow carmakers to offer tighter 'Eyes Free' integration, giving drivers a broader range of hands-free and eyes-free control.

iOS in the Car will display a version of the iPhone's controls on the vehicle's in-dash screen, offering better access to the iPhone's key apps, including maps and GPS data, and full Siri functionality.

Apple's new iTunes Radio service - a Spotify, Rdio and Pandora rival - will function through iOS in the Car, while voice control of SMS and iMessage functions will also be available.

As with the Siri Eyes Free product, a number of carmakers have already signed on with the iOS in the Car platform, including BMW, Ferrari, GM (including Opel and Chevy), Nissan and Infiniti, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Toyota, Honda and Acura, Kia, and Chrysler.
