A notorious intersection in Geelong is about to become the first in Australia with raised safety platforms, under a trial conducted by Victoria’s state government.

The intersection in question is the corner of Kidman Avenue and the Surf Coast Highway in Belmont.

From January 1 2008 to December 31 2012, this intersection saw six collisions involving road trauma; four of which resulted from vehicles attempting to turn right.

Using a method modelled by The Netherlands, the intersection will soon feature raised sections - similar to speed humps - in order to 'calm' approaching traffic.

Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission reports that the Dutch program has been deemed a success when combined with traffic lights, while VicRoads believes impacts on travel times from the new intersection design will be minimal.
