The numbers are out: Victoria's police force has locked up more than 1000 vehicles in the first three months of the state's tough new hoon laws.

From July 1, police have had the power to immediately impound hoon vehicles for 30 days, a significant increase on the previous two-day period.

Cars and motorbikes alike are filling up impoundment yards across the state, including 709 in metro Melbourne and a further 329 in regional areas.

According to statistics released by Victoria Police today, the vast majority (974) of impounded vehicles were driven by males.

The 18-21 age group proved the most common for hoon drivers, followed by 22 to 25 year-olds and 26 to 29 year-olds. A frightening 13 impoundments were vehicles being driven or ridden by people under 18 years old.

The top offence for impoundments was driving while disqualified/suspended (310 impoundments), followed by excessive speed more than 45km and (240) and improper use of a motor vehicle (239).

A further 54 were for excessive speeding of more than 70km/h over the posted limit. 

In the past three months, the youngest motorist to have their car impounded was 14-years-old, while the oldest driver was 85.
