Victoria Police will continue its Operation Tonka campaign this week, setting up road-blocks between Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest over the next two days.

As part of Operation Tonka, police are cracking down on drink drivers, mobile phone use, seat belt infringements, disqualified or unlicensed drivers and unsafe vehicles.

"Police will be out in force patrolling the road and carrying out preliminary breath tests. But tackling road trauma is not something that police can do alone; drivers must take responsibility and care on our roads," Sergeant Stephen Phillips said.

"We will be conducting vehicle roadworthy checks in a bid to remove unsafe vehicles from the roads."

During the same two-day operation last week, Victoria Police performed 854 breath tests and issued 18 penalty notices for seatbelt offences, unregistered vehicles, speeding and displaying false number plates. A further 41 notices were issued for unroadworthy vehicles.

Victoria's road toll stands at 61, compared to 66 for the same period last year.
