Victoria Police will today kick off Operation Eastern, a three-month blitz on the state's Eastern region. The campaign comes after a 33 percent rise in road deaths compared to the same period last year.
Operation Eastern will see police cracking down on speeding, dangerous driving, mobile phone use, fatigue, unsafe overtaking and drugs and alcohol.
The operation will run throughout August, September and October. Areas of focus will include the cities of Monash, Yarra Ranges, Benalla, Wangaratta, Bass Coast and East Gippsland.
“We have experienced an alarming 68 road deaths in the Eastern Region in 2011, 17 more than this time last year,” Eastern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Wendy Steendam said.
“That’s 68 families whose lives will never be the same and 68 communities who are still dealing with the loss of one of their own."
Victoria's road toll currently stands at 182 - up from 177 for the same period last year.
