Victoria Police has released final numbers for the Easter long weekend's Operation Crossroads, which saw nearly 5000 motorists caught speeding.

Beginning last Thursday and ending at midnight on Monday, the operation tallied a total of 12,722 traffic offences across the state.

Among them, 220 disqualified and 429 unlicensed drivers were booked, while 4767 motorists were caught speeding.

A full 798 motorists were nabbed using their mobile phones while driving, and 605 were caught disobeying road signs and signals.

Motorcyclists were also a focus through the operation, with 102 unlicensed riders found and 149 unregistered motorcycles detected.

A worrying 29 riders were caught without a helmet, 32 disobeyed signs and signals, and 240 were caught speeding.

Three lives were lost on Victorian roads over the weekend, matching 2010 and 2011 figures.

“Today, our road toll is 88 – five more than this time last year. Loss of life on our roads is something we all must take action against," Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said.
