Nissan has confirmed the V8 Supercar Championship's worst-kept secret: the upcoming Altima sedan will form the basis of Nissan Motorsport’s entry in the 2013 series of Australia's premier road-race category.

Nissan Motorsport driver and Kelly Racing co-owner Ricky Kelly, along with team CEO John Crennan, will be on hand for the new Altima's world premiere in New York this week.

You won't need to wait until then to see the new sedan however, with full details and images already available here at TMR.

As for the racing version, Nissan has confirmed that the new Nissan Patrol’s 5.6 litre VK56DE V8 engine will power the rear-wheel-drive Altima V8 Supercar.

The engine's capacity will be reduced to 5.0 litres however, keeping the V8 mill in-line with the series' 2013 Car of the Future regulations.

The regular Altima will use a front-drive configuration, and will be offered - in the US at least - with four- and six-cylinder petrol engines.

Nissan will no doubt be crowing about the passenger-car origins of its V8 engine, making it (at this stage) unique among 2013 V8 Supercar entries; Holden and Ford racing engines having no direct relation to their road cars.

(Holden and Ford would doubtless counter that the road-going counterparts to their own race cars are genuine rear-wheel-drive performance models.)

The Altima V8 Supercar will make its race debut at the opening round of the 2013 series in February, but the road-going version will not hit Australian showrooms until later in the year.

Asked whether the road-car’s Australian launch would coincide with the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in October, Nissan Australia’s Ian Moreillon told CarSales, “It’s maybe a good idea," acknowledging the marketing potential of the big event.
