The facelifted Toyota Yaris range has bowed in Belgium ahead of an Australia launch later this year.

Toyota Europe took the lead role in the design and engineering of the updated Yaris lineup and while in that part of the world there is much focus on a new 1.5-litre petrol engine (to meet the tough Euro 6c emissions standard) and more refinement for the hybrid model, Toyota Australia has confirmed the local lineup will continue to be powered exclusively by the familiar 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre units.

Credit for the revised front and rear-end styling goes to Toyota’s ED2 design studio in the South of France and Toyota says the newcomer boasts more than 900 new parts.

The new styling is intended to provide a wider look with more horizontal lines.

Significant changes up-front include a so-called ‘catamaran’ architecture for the bumper, new headlights, new fog lights, new trapezoidal grilles in a honeycomb finish and a fresh look surrounding the central Toyota logo.

In profile there are new lower door mouldings while the rear scores a new tailgate, lights and another ‘catamaran’ bumper.

There are also new 15-inch and 16-inch wheel designs.

Hydro Blue and Tokyo Red are the two new paint colours which takes the total number available to 10. In Europe, an optional Design Pack adds colour accents – in Hydro Blue, Fired Red and Lime – to the lower doors sills and lower front bumper.

Inside, the updated Toyota Yaris runs revised instrumentation with two analogue dials surrounding a new 4.2-inch colour TFT multi-function display, new trim materials and colours, new propeller-style air-vents, blue instrument lighting and revised switches. The rear seat now includes ISOFIX child seat mountings.

In Europe, Toyota has overhauled the Yaris models grades – entry level, mid-grade and mid+ grade - while a new Chic grade is the range-topper featuring a two-tone exterior finish designed to appeal to younger, style-conscious buyers.

On the engineering front, Toyota’s focus has been on improving ride and handling with re-tuned shock absorbers and revisions to the electric power steering and engine mounts.

Refinement was under the microscope too and, as well as the new engine mounts, the updated Yaris scores a new exhaust system with a sub-silencer, modified intake airbox, a new front subframe, new driveshafts and a larger engine rill restrictor.

Safety has been boosted with rear seat belts including force limiters and pretensioners and the standard fitment of the Toyota Safety Sense active safety systems (Pre-Collision System with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beam).

Toyota Australia is still working through specifications for local models.
