Uber Ordered To Leave London – Company Appeals

London has declared ride-sharing service Uber unsafe for its city streets, stripping the company of its right to operate from the end of the month.

The swift decision leaves the more-than 40,000 Uber drivers in London with only a few days to consider a career change, as the city wastes no time in shutting the service down.

Also stranded are the 3.5 million registered users in London, who will need to find alternative transport or use ‘traditional’ taxis.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is even behind the move, with authorities labelling Uber ‘unsafe’ and showing a “lack of corporate responsibility”.

"[We] consider that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications," the Transport For London group said in a statement.

The ABC reports that TFL added Uber was not "fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license". The group’s concerns included inadequate security checks for Uber drivers, a lack of action over serious criminal allegations and a lack of transparency for law enforcement agencies. 

Uber has hit back at the move, saying London was “closed to innovative companies” and restricting choice for consumers.

The company has also lodged an appeal, and as such, can operate for an unknown period beyond the deadline while the appeal is considered.
