The debut of Toyota and Subaru’s 86/BRZ twins has had the rumour mill buzzing with wishful talk of a souped-up version in the works, and this recently-sighted prototype could offer a ray of hope.
Spied testing at the Nürburgring, this BRZ is wearing a brace of performance oriented add-ons similar to the STI-equipped road car displayed at last month’s Australian International Motor Show.
This prototype appears to be wearing the same chin-spoiler and side-skirts as the Australian show car, with similar multispoke STI wheels - though appearing to be one-inch larger 18-inch units.
Also evident in these photos is a T-bar rear wing, lowered suspension, and upgraded brake package.
A turbocharged BRZ flagship is expected in Subaru’s future - as hinted by last year’s LA Auto Show BRZ STI Concept - however this prototype is not likely to be it.
Standard-looking (Australian spec) exhaust outlets and the absence of a bonnet intercooler duct suggest that this prototype remains naturally-aspirated, and therefore likely a mere testbed for STI off-the-shelf accessories.
We would happily be proven wrong, however.
