Big powertrain changes are coming to Toyota’s Yaris in overseas markets, with the light hatch set to benefit from a new 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The Yaris is currently available in Australia with both 1.3 and 1.5 litre engines, and these engines will carry-over when the face-lifted Yaris arrives later this year.

Overseas, however, the new 1.5 unit is set to replace the current 1.3 while upping performance and improving economy.

On the surface, the numbers might shield this fact as power rises just 2kW to 82kW when compared with the current 1.5 unit offered in Australia, and torque actually drops from 141 to 136Nm.

But 118Nm of that maximum torque figure is now available from as low as 2000 RPM, and the new 1.5 is 0.8 seconds faster to 100km/h from rest than the current 1.3 litre engine.

The new engine is designed to meet Euro 6C emissions standards, and fuel consumption has improved 12 percent (when matched with the CVT automatic) compared to the outgoing unit. In particular, Toyota wanted the Yaris to be more economical at motorway speeds.
