Toyota has confirmed that it will apply the Tonka truck treatment to its HiLux ute to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Toyota Motor Corporation, and the 70th anniversary of the Tonka brand.

Toyota Australia’s design team is responsible for the big boy’s toy - a one-off, fully driveable concept based on the Toyota HiLux SR5 4x4.

To help transform the already capable HiLux into a “prodigious rock climber” the Hilux will receive a customised suspension to deliver a massive ride height boost with a set of upgraded wheels and tyres to match.

Toyota’s teaser sketch also reveals a new front bumper and grille treatment which can be expected to be joined by a serious set of wheel arch extensions. The car's door mouldings and tailgate will also be given the Tonka treatment as Toyota promises "almost every exterior HiLux surface will be beefed up as part of the Tonka metamorphosis."

It just wouldn’t be a Tonka truck without the iconic yellow and black exterior, which will be a feature of the new concept, set to be unveiled in the coming months.

Toyota Australia product design chief, Nicolas Hogios described the tough and enduring DNA of the HiLux and Tonka brands as a natural fit.

"We expect the extreme style and capability of our re-imagined HiLux will capture the imagination of kids and adults alike," Hogios said.

"HiLux is such a great canvas, and we really pushed the envelope by marrying our number-one seller with the Tonka brand. The end result is so exciting because the HiLux Tonka really delivers the dream of every Australian kid who ever wanted such a truck."

Tonka has previously teamed up with Ford in the USA, showing the heavy-duty F 750 as a fully-functional Tonka dump truck at the 2015 NTEA Work truck Show in Indianapolis. Check out more of the Hilux Tonka concept's design development in the video below.
