Toyota has confirmed that it will apply the Tonka truck treatment to its HiLux ute to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Toyota Motor Corporation, and the 70th anniversary of the Tonka brand.
Toyota Australia’s design team is responsible for the big boy’s toy - a one-off, fully driveable concept based on the Toyota HiLux SR5 4x4.
To help transform the already capable HiLux into a “prodigious rock climber” the Hilux will receive a customised suspension to deliver a massive ride height boost with a set of upgraded wheels and tyres to match.
Toyota’s teaser sketch also reveals a new front bumper and grille treatment which can be expected to be joined by a serious set of wheel arch extensions. The car's door mouldings and tailgate will also be given the Tonka treatment as Toyota promises "almost every exterior HiLux surface will be beefed up as part of the Tonka metamorphosis."
