Toyota Supra Back In The Spotlight

Another day, another round of Toyota Supra speculation and rumours.

With the success of the Lexus LFA supercar and the unveiling of the new 86 Coupe, fans are trumpeting a return to Toyota's sports-car glory days.

And as dreams go, it's a good one to have. After impressing with multiple generations of the Supra, Celica, Corolla and MR2 (among others), Toyota's loyal followers have plenty to keep the imagination going. 

The success of the 86 and its Subaru BRZ twin will be the defining factor in whether we'll see a Supra comeback, but one other point hints at its chances of a revival: the massive void above the 86.

While the Lexus LFA was always a strictly limited-numbers affair, the gap between it and the relatively entry-level 86 is huge - in both power and price.

Now, new reports out of the US suggest that Toyota is closer than ever to plugging the gap with a new series-production coupe.

American magazine Motor Trend reports that the carmaker will look to the technology developed with the GRMN Sports Hybrid concept pair.

The concepts are built on the remains of the last MR2/MR-S roadster, but power is provided by a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total output of 220kW.

In Supra form, the system would likely develop a good whack more than that, with even the new Lexus GS 450h hybrid's 3.5 V6 and electric motor combo delivering 252kW. 

The report adds that the V6 engine would power the rear wheels of the Supra, while the electric motor would power the front axle for an all-wheel-drive arrangement.

As always, it remains to be seen how much of this report can be believed, but one thing is certain: if Toyota builds it, the fans will come.
