New car sales figures put Toyota Australia on track for one million hybrid sales this year. Meanwhile, back at the farm, Skoda's Australian arm has cracked 10,000 sales.

Toyota is likely to reach a landmark one million worldwide hybrid sales in 2012, according to results to the end of June.

The Japanese carmaker sold 630,048 Toyota and Lexus petrol-electric hybrids in the first half of the year, eclipsing the 628,989 total for 2011.

Among the range, the Prius hatch remains the biggest seller with almost 202,000 sales during this period. Other hybrid models, including the Prius c (150,000), Prius v (100,000), and Camry Hybrid (50,000), also proved popular.

Since the launch of the original Prius in 1997, the Toyota Group has sold more than 4.2 million hybrid models - nearly 2.7 million of these wearing a Prius badge.

Toyota estimates that these vehicles have been responsible for saving 26 million tonnes in CO2 emissions to date, with future generations set to be even more environmentally beneficial.

"Hybrid technology is a trump card for fuel-economy improvement. It is core technology that can also be used for next-generation vehicles including battery electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles”, Toyota Australia’s Matthew Callachor said.
