Toyota has recalled approximately 98,000 examples of its RAV4 SUV for a potential problem with the rear seatbelts.

The carmaker says that the seatbelts for both outbound rear seat passengers could be compromised during a high-speed collision, as the webbing could come into contact with a metal seat cushion frame.

Should this occur, the seatbelt may become damaged, which could reduce its effectiveness in minimising the chance of serious injury.

Toyota says, to date, there are no such reported incidents in Australia.
