Toyota has confirmed it will unveil a new hybrid version of its midsized RAV4 SUV at next week’s New York Auto Show.

Details for the new variant are still to be revealed, although power will likely come from the same 2.5 litre petrol engine and electric motor combination that features in the Camry Hybrid, along with the Lexus NX 300h and ES 300h models.

It is unclear, however, if the RAV4 Hybrid will boast the electric all-wheel-drive system that features in some NX 300h models, or if it will utilise an more affordable front-wheel-drive design.

This news follows reports in 2012 that Toyota had begun to consider plans for a RAV4 Hybrid.

Speaking with the UK's Auto Express, the RAV4's deputy chief engineer Yoshikazu Saeki said: “(A hybrid version) would not be difficult to do".

“We are watching the market. After introducing the new RAV4 we will see. There will be a possibility of introducing a hybrid RAV4 and we will respond to what the market wants.”
