The Toyota Prius V, the second model in Toyota's growing Prius range, is now on sale in Japan as the Prius Alpha.

Based on the current third-generation Prius, the new Prius V offers seven- and five-seat configurations and a more advanced lithium-ion battery pack.

In five-seater form, the Prius V offers 60 percent more storage space than the regular Prius, while its greater length and height means improved head and leg-space for occupants.

Power is provided by the same 1.8 litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine driving the regular Prius, mated to an electric motor. Power for the petrol engine is rated at 73kW and 142Nm; the electric motor adds 60kW and 207Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption is listed at 5.9 l/100km, higher than the 3.9 l/100km of the current Prius but less than the 6.0 l/100km of the Hybrid Camry.

In Japan, pricing for the Prius V starts at the equivalent of AU$27,500. The range-topping variant to the new car - featuring Toyota's Entune infotainment system - is priced at around AU$38,700.

An Australian debut for the big Prius V has yet to be confirmed, although Toyota's Mike Breen told TMR that it is currently under consideration for a local launch.
