Make sense of this one: Toyota has made a glorious return to the world of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with its new 86 coupe... and new reports out of the homeland suggest the carmaker will soon enter a racing version of the Prius hybrid in Japan's SuperGT series.

Granted, any Prius racing in the SuperGT GT300 class is unlikely to share much with its roadgoing counterpart, but what on Earth is going on? Has the top-brass gone crazy?

According to Japan's Auto Sport Magazine (which is responsible for the rendering above), the logic goes like this: the 86 won't need any help becoming recognised as a true sports car, whereas the growing Prius range could benefit from an image shakeup.

We're not sure that the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" mantra is going to work for the Prius, but, hey, whatever floats Toyota's boat (or sells its petrol-electric hybrid cars).

Whether there's any truth to the out-there report remains to be seen, and exactly what powertrain would feature is unclear. Can we expect a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain pumping out 225kW, the GT300 class requirement?

Fans of the new 86 needn't fret, however: while we may not see the Toyota version on the track, Subaru's BRZ GT300 is ready and raring to go.
