Toyota's TRD tuning arm has given the new Prius C hybrid a sporty makeover for the Tokyo Auto Salon, ahead of the car's Australian debut in the first half of 2012.

When it hits local showrooms, the brand-new hybrid will represent the growing Prius family in the light car segment, with the larger Prius V wagon joining the range at the big end.

Whether Australia will see the sharpened TRD kit, which includes a range of styling add-ons, a high-flow muffler and stiffened suspension, remains to be seen.

Like the regular Prius already on sale in Australia, the Prius C pairs a regular petrol engine (a 1.5 litre unit in this case) with a high-output electric motor.

Combined power is listed at 73kW, and Toyota promises fuel consumption figures between 2.5 l/100km and 2.8 l/100km in the Japanese market.

The Prius C measures 3995mm long, making it 110mm longer than the Yaris light car, although both cars share a width of 1695mm. Height is 1445mm and the wheelbase is 2550mm (Yaris: 1500mm, 2510mm).

Watch for more details on the Prius C's local debut in the coming months.
