Toyota Australia sees hydrogen as the perfect replacement for petrol-powered cars in Australia, and a more viable solution than electric vehicles.
That’s why the company has imported three of its Mirai fuel-cell vehicles into the country to act as demonstrator models for the technology over the next three years.
Toyota will use the Mirais to drum up support for hydrogen fuelled vehicles here, as well as for the related refuelling infrastructure that will become vital to their success.
To help add to the reach of the three cars, Toyota will also install a portable refuelling station to its exhibition, able to be shipped around the country - along with the cars.
Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner shared his enthusiasm about having secured the three vehicle test fleet.
"After having a taste of the technology last October, we are incredibly excited to have not one, but three of the fuel cell vehicles back in Australia," Mr Buttner said.
"We are looking forward to educating a whole new audience on this future technology and generating more awareness of fuel cell vehicles."
The Mirai, which is now on sale in Japan, Europe, and California uses an on-board fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity which powers the car to the tune of 114kW of power and 335Nm of torque.
The Mirai also made a brief appearence in Australia last year for the World Hydrogen Technology Convention; TMR had the opportunity to check it out during its quick visit.
When the hydrogen supply is depleted the Mirai can be simply refuelled in a matter of minutes, offering superior flexibility compared to the recharge times of traditional electric vehicles which can take hours to charge.
Mr Buttner expressed his desire to include hydrogen fuel as a future choice to Australian consumers.
"We are extremely interested in fuel cell technology, but we need the relevant infrastructure in place before we can sell these vehicles in Australia," he said.
"This will take time to develop so it is imperative that we take a whole of industry approach so that we can move these plans along as quickly as possible.”
Toyota Australia will feature the Mirai at a number of upcoming events and conferences around the country.
