Toyota Australia will bring its hydrogen fuel cell powered Mirai here, for the World Hydrogen Technologies Convention in Sydney during October.

The Mirai is Toyota’s first commercially available fuel cell vehicle, on sale already in Japan and soon to be offered in Europe and North America.

Australia will be one of the first countries outside those designated sale markets to display the Mirai.

Don’t rush to your Toyota dealer with a deposit in hand just yet though. Toyota is merely demonstrating its future technology, awaiting the required hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to be put in place first.

Like the Prius hybrid before it, the Mirai, which means ‘future’ in Japanese, presents another green-vehicle option to overseas buyers.

"Toyota pioneered the mass production of hybrid technology and we truly believe fuel cell vehicles will play a key role in Toyota's global future." Toyota Australia president, Dave Buttner, said.

"It's clear that Australians are searching for more eco-friendly options. Fuel cell vehicles emit only water and can offer the same convenience of petrol-powered cars,"

"We are incredibly excited to welcome the Mirai to Australian shores in October."

The Mirai arriving here will be the first right-hand-drive vehicle of its kind in the country, but Hyundai Australia was the first to permanently base a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle here, with its ix35 Hydrogen test vehicle.

During its time in Australia the Mirai will be made available to government representatives, and other key stakeholders for demonstration purposes.

The vehicle itself is capable of a 550km range (based on the European test cycle), and can be refuelled in around three minutes.

The hydrogen fuel cell converts hydrogen into electricity, with water vapour being the only vehicular emission.

Toyota has more than 20-years experience developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, mostly behind the scenes. The Mirai retails for US$57,500 (AU$83,000) and includes three years, or up to US$15,000 (AU$21,700) free refuelling.
