Japan's carmakers are no strangers to quirky concepts. While the motoring world is in a lather over the production version of the FT-86 concept, Toyota's Fun-Vii is motorshow business-as-usual.

Described by Toyota as a "smartphone on wheels," the Fun-Vii concept is one big rolling display screen, allowing the driver to 'publish'  animated text and images across the entire external surface - or simply change the colour of its digital 'paint'.

Details are limited, but Toyota says the Fun-Vii can also interface with its surroundings, and a number of its features can be controlled from a smartphone app without ever climbing aboard.

Inside, there's an autopilot function, augmented reality control system, along with a 3D hologram "navigation concierge," multimedia connectivity and full smartphone integration.

As concepts go, there's more than a little 'blue sky' thinking in the Fun-Vii, but Toyota says it is working to bring a number of the concept's features to market... sometime this century.
