Toyota's long-awaited entry-level sports car comes one step closer to a production reality, with the unveiling of the FT-86 II Concept at Geneva today.

Announced in January as a 'pre-production' concept, the FT-86 II follows 2009's FT-86 Concept as a preview of what's to come in Toyota's return to the real-wheel-drive sports coupe platform.

Measuring 4235mm long, the FT-86 II is considerably shorter than Toyota's last RWD hero coupe in the Supra Mk IV, but features a long 2570mm wheelbase - 20mm longer than the Supra's wheelbase.

When compared to the original FT-86 concept, the second-generation is larger in almost every direction. Wheelbase remains unchanged, but width has grown by 35mm to 1795mm, and height by 10mm to 1270mm. The original concept is shorter also, measuring just 4160mm long.

The new sports car's powerplant has long been confirmed to be a Subaru-derived boxer engine, although even now Toyota remains tight-lipped on the subject of the FT-86 II's power and performance figures.

Toyota says the engine and driving position of the FT-86 II Concept have been set "as low and as far back as possible," with a focus on balance and stability.

That, for now at least, is all the world number one carmaker has let on - but with production expected to start later this year, all will be revealed soon enough.
