Toyota has established an engineering quality improvement division and a special committee for global quality to improve safety and "beef up quality controls" across its international operations.
It will also no doubt be charged with ensuring that quality issues giving rise to recalls (which have included the Prius in Australia), are corrected before the product gets to market.
The new division will collect information for each market Toyota operates in, allowing the research and development departments to follow up on quality issues and on ways to avoid recurrences where failure occurs.
Represented in Australia by a managing officer from Toyota's Japan headquarters and two senior vice-presidents from the company's Australian offices, the quality committee will "exchange insights and tackle safety issues".
